QUESTION POSED ON: 09 February 2006
I recently purchased Windows 2000. I installed it in my computer as an upgrade to what I already had installed (windows 98). It will take my password and say that it is updating my settings but then it brings me to the password screen again. Basically the probem is that I cannot log into the computer. It keeps repeating the process. What can I do?

EXPERT RESPONSE

I can suggest a couple of things.

  • Have you tried to start in safe mode? That may help.
  • Can you access your files over the network, say, with MACHINENAMEC$ using the administrator account and its password (you assigned this during setup)? If so, the easiest solution may be to copy your data and do a re-install.
