QUESTION POSED ON: 17 March 2004
I am administrator of a small LAN with Windows 2000 Professional workstations and only one Windows 2000 server, which is domain controller, DNS server, ISA server and SQL server. The server machine is old PII 400 MHz, and I would like to change it even if it is working very well and I don't have performance problems with it. The problem is how to replace the domain controller machine with all other services to new one.

EXPERT RESPONSE
Your first problem is you only have one domain controller. ALWAYS deploy a minimum of 2 domain controllers for every domain. I'd recommend purchasing your second system, installing it as a second DC, then moving the services over as needed. Yes, this usually means a completely new configuration and installation of them on the second system. Once the move is complete, destroy and rebuilt the old system as your backup DC.
